FLIP: Video
for Students and Teacher
Inexpensive, simple to use, video cameras that fit into your pocket
have expanded the use of video from citizen journalism to student's
classrooms. Although the FLIP
video camera's simple 4 button design has made capturing video a
simple, no fuss process, the possibilities for producing or publishing
the videos are endless ranging from free programs to online video
editing tools. This session will give you a chance to master different
approaches to producing and publishing videos for your educational
projects, whether they be student projects or teacher projects, such as
creating instructional videos. Join a network of educators who are
discovering the power of video in education. FLIP camera required for
this course and included in the registration fee.

GarageBand
for Mac and Mixcraft for Windows: Two Similar Learning
Environments for Student Projects
For years, Windows users have asked
about a program like GarageBand for their computers. Mixcraft is very
similar to GB in tools and features. This course will explore the two
in a side by side multiplatform computer lab so participants can select
the computer and software they wish to use. The focus of the course
will be to develop projects that can be used with students in grades 3
through 12 in a variety of subjects including podcasts and music making.
Instructor:
Matt Podd has a B.M.

in Jazz Studies at the Eastman School of Music this spring. He has had
original compositions performed around the world by both professional
and amateur musicians. As a keyboard player, Matt performs regularly as
a jazz pianist, vocal accompanist, and church organist. In addition to
his pursuits as a composer and performer, Matt is a dedicated music
educator, currently mentoring young composers through the VT MIDI
Project. His extensive knowledge of music and multimedia make him
an invaluable resource. Matt teaches at music camps, and children's
theatres, and private lessons.

Independent
Projects:
Have a project in mind that supports your personal
professional development goals? If you have a general plan and now just
need TIME and/or COLLEGE CREDIT to fulfill that goal then sign up for
the Music and Multimedia Summer Institute Independent Projects course.
You'll have access to other instructors, a curriculum and assessment
consultant, and music and multimedia technology specialists for
assistance. There will also be opportunities to participate in special
focus sessions and network with other institute participants. Contact sandi@vtmidi.org to consider the
options that might support your need. Independent Projects need to be
outlined and approved by Sandi prior to the opening of the institute.
Composer in Residence:
Erik Nielsen will be
at the Summer
Institute as a composer in
residence. He has
been
composing for 30 years and his catalog includes works for chorus,
orchestra, solo instruments, chamber music of many configurations and
electronic music. His works have been performed in Canada, Europe and
Australia as well as many locations in the United States. Erik will
work individually with participants and notes, "Some of the people who
attend have never composed before, while some have considerable
experience composing or arranging. I have found that the works
involved range from very specific pieces for use in the teacher's own
classroom to works for percussion ensemble, concert band, jazz
ensemble, rock band, chorus or orchestra. I spend most of my time
privately discussing the various aspects of the specific compositions
with the individual creators. For me it is both gratifying and
enjoyable to increase my acquaintances and to share my love of the
compositional process."
