COURSES and INSTRUCTORS
(choose one from the following)
:
Learning and Teaching Music Composition
This course will operate as a model for teaching composition to students from 5th grade through college. Using the new online curriculum and composition studio Inside Music: Exploring Composition, lead author Matt Podd will give teachers the composing experience they need to feel comfortable teaching their own young composers. In addition to a focus on the current content of the program, institute participants will explore extensions for the lessons and learn how to create and deliver new templates to meet the specific needs of their own students. Because of the flexible design of Inside Music and the ability of students to access it anywhere and anytime, this course can work well in all music classes: performing ensembles, general music, theory, history, composition or music technology classes as well as those students enrolled in lessons. This course is applicable to all music educators in both public and private settings. A Noteflight Crescendo account will be provided to all in the course although attendees are welcome to use any notation program they already have.
Instructor:
Matt Podd is a freelance pianist, composer, and educator based in New York City. He is the lead author of the new and groundbreaking online composition curriculum, Inside Music: Exploring Composition, published by Davis Publications. Matt (along with brother Adam) is a lead teacher and curriculum developer at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School and The Brooklyn Music Factory, working in classrooms and after-school programs.
Matt is a regular pianist and arranger for many choirs, theatre groups, and ensembles including the Young People’s Chorus of NYC, directed by Francisco Nunez. He has performed with this ensemble at the White House, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and for many concerts around New York City. An award-winning composer, Matt's works for jazz ensemble have been widely performed throughout the United States, including a prominent feature at the International Rochester Jazz Festival. Matt holds degrees in jazz studies and music composition from the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College.

Additionally teachers may create assignments with notation templates, organize online discussion, assessments and grade completely on the web. NLE allows anywhere and anytime access for students on the internet. This course is designed for teachers with some experience using Noteflight Learning Edition and will focus heavily on sharing, copying and editing of content developed so that participants can leave the institute with firm curriculum plans completed. The course will be a unique blend of facilitated learning and sharing. Teacher will leave the institute with completed curriculum work for the coming school year.

Digital Audio: 21st Century Tools for Teaching and Learning
Today's educators are faced with a generation of tech-savvy learners. The music classroom is no exception, and engaging these students means speaking their language. This course will help you integrate new technology while maintaining your teaching philosophy and artistic integrity. You will learn to assess performance, teach musical concepts, and even explore composition using the fundamentals of digital audio. Participants will learn on their platform of choice, either focusing on Mixcraft as a PC user, or Garageband as a Mac user. In addition to digital audio basics, there will be an introduction to incorporating video for both Mixcraft and Garageband users. Instructors will model 21st century lessons plans and guide you in developing your own. This session will combine the PC and Mac users for audio basics and sharing, but split into two different room according to the platform of the laptop you’ve brought for use at the institute for hands-on work and platform specific instruction.
